چکیده

Although the unified formula for γ-ray absorption process involving both the magnetic field and a perpendicular electric field derived by Daugherty & Lerche (1975) is correct, we argued in this paper that their conclusion that the induced electric fields are important in the pair formation process in the pulsar magnetospheres is wrong and misleading. The key point is that usually the direction of a γ photon at the emission point observed in the laboratory frame should be (v/c, 0, [1− (v/c)]) rather than (0, 0, 1), where v is the co-rotating velocity. This emission direction is just the one which results in zero attenuation coefficient of the γ photon. Calculation shows that after the photon has moved a distance, its direction lead to the result that the induced electric field is also of minor importance. Thus only γ −B process is the important mechanism for the pair production in the pulsar magnetospheres. The implications of the modification by ejecting the induced electric field are also discussed.

Particle Acceleration and Non-thermal Emission in Pulsar Outer Magnetospheric Gap

A two-dimensional electrodynamic model is used to study particle acceleration and non-thermal emission mechanisms in the pulsar magnetospheres. We solve distribution of the accelerating electric field with the emission process and the pair-creation process in meridional plane, which includes the rotational axis and the magnetic axis. By solving the evolutions of the Lorentz factor, and of the p...

X - Ray Emission from the Planet Pulsar B 1257 + 12

We report the detection of the millisecond pulsar B1257+12 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In a 20 ks exposure we detected 25 photons from the pulsar, with energies between 0.4 and 2.0 keV, corresponding to the flux F X = (4.4 ± 0.9) × 10 −15 ergs s −1 cm −2 in this energy range. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law model with photon index Γ ≈ 2.8 and luminosity L X ≈ 2.5 × 10...

The energy source of a pulsar's non-thermal emission is the rotational energy loss of the neutron star. The rotational energy of the neutron star is transformed into the pulsar radiation by a long sequence of processes. The processes of this sequence are discussed. 1. Introduction The current sample of radio pulsars contains about six hundred pulsars (e.g., Taylor et al. 1993). The radio lumino...

Gamma-ray Emissions from Pulsars: Upper Limits on the Tev Fluxes from Outer Magnetospheres

We study the γ-ray emissions from an outer-magnetospheric gap around a rotating neutron star. Migratory electrons and positrons are accelerated by the electric field in the gap to radiate copious γ-rays via curvature process. Some of these gamma-rays materialize as pairs by colliding with the X-rays in the gap, leading to a pair production cascade. Imposing a gap closure condition that a single...

High energy gamma-rays from Globular Clusters

It is expected that specific globular clusters can contain up to a hundred of millisecond pulsars. These pulsars can accelerate leptons at the shock waves originated in collisions of the pulsar winds and/or inside the pulsar magnetospheres. Energetic leptons diffuse gradually through the globular cluster comptonizing stellar and microwave background radiation. We calculate the GeV-TeV γ-ray spe...
